Lerwick, the capital of Shetland is a 14 hour ferry crossing from Aberdeen.

The MZ5A QTH near Hillswick on Eshaness is about 35 miles from Lerwick.

This is the same (rented cottage) QTH as used by GZ7V in CQWW SSB for the past two years.

Ian G3WVG and Nigel G3TXF (Members of the Three A's Contest Group: M5A) operated CQ-WW CW 2001 from The Shetland Islands as MZ5A. Total number of QSOs: 4,027.

The MZ prefix had been issued as a special prefix for use on Shetland. This was the first ever use of an MZ prefix.

The combination of the high latitude (60 deg N) and a major Aurora on the Saturday virtually flattened the LF bands for much of the Contest.

We had been warned (by Chris GM3WOJ of GZ7V) that the weather in Shetland can be awful in late November. It was. And we had also been told that if an Aurora occured, then we'd be getting nowhere on LF. It did and we didn't!

Ian G3WVG did a grand job assembling five antennas in atrocious weather conditions.

Doing antenna work in the almost continuous gales was exhausting. The five antennas at MZ5A (4-el 10m beam at 40ft, A3S tri-bander at 40ft, 67ft quarter-wave vertical for 80m, elevated 40m GP and a 160m dipole) all worked well and stayed up throughout the Contest despite the concerted effort of the Shetland gales to blow them down.
