OE5TXF operated CQWW-160-CW in "Low-Power Assisted" from near Wels. . The 160m antenna installed for the CQWW-160-CW contest was a simple low dipole. The centre of the dipole was at about 6m high on a pole and ladder leaning against an apple tree. See photo. The two ends of the 160m dipole were stretched out and tied to other trees at about 2m above the ground. As the QTH in OE5 is on steep sloping ground (rising to the West, but falling away to the East), the effective height of the Topband dipole towards the East is higher than it appears. However with rising ground to the West, any contacts with North America (especially with Low Power) were difficult. Only four QSOs were made with North America.
Operating during the contest was mainly in Search and Pounce (S&P) mode. Any CQing was usually done "higher up the band" at around 1850-90kHz. That part of the band was much less crowded, than below 1840kHz. The Continental Breakdown (with over 97% of QSOs being in Europe!) was a good indicator of the reality of operating CQWW-160 contest with both a low antenna and also with Low-Power! Even relatively local non-EU Multipliers such as ED8W and CQ3J were quite difficult to work, whereas D4Z and HZ7C both came back after the first call. |

The States/Provinces Multiplier table is a sorry sight with just four Multipliers : PA, KY, VA and PE (VY2ZM). |

Total operating time in CQWW-160 Contest was about twenty-two hours. Started at the beginning at 22z on Friday and operated throughout the first night until about 0730z. Sunrise in OE5 was about 0630z. During Saturday daytime, did some operating in the French REF-CW Contest which had started at 06z on Saturday morning, On Saturday evening returned to operating the CQWW-160 Contest for much of the night before taking a three hour sleep during early Sunday morning. Again operated during the daytime on Sunday in REF-CW right up until the French contest finished at 18z, after which there was some more operating in CQWW-160 up until the end at 22z on Sunday evening. The best QSO rates were during the first night averaging around 60 QSOs per hour. However nearly all the operating throughout the contest was in S&P mode, with my LP signal not making it through to so many stations! Made 954 QSOs in CQWW-160 and 350 QSOs in REF-CW. |
